Marine Debris Program Participates in Pacific Islands Region Observer Program Training

OCTOBER 26, 2020 — On October 15, the NOAA Marine Debris Program’s (MDP) Chief Scientist, Amy V. Uhrin, provided a virtual presentation to the Pacific Islands Region Observer Program as part of their 6-month re-training meeting.

The Pacific Islands Region Observer Program is responsible for deploying observers on U.S. fishing vessels to collect data on effort and catch, as well as incidental interactions with protected species, such as sea turtles and marine mammals. Dr. Uhrin’s presentation focused on MDP's recently published paper on marine debris intercepted by Hawaii-based pelagic longlines, the data for which was collected by observers in this fishery. The paper can be found at https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-64771-1
