Marine Debris Program Presents to National Academy of Sciences Committee

February 22, 2021 — On February 18, Nancy Wallace and Hillary Burgess of the Marine Debris Program (MDP) presented to the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) ad hoc committee on the United States Contributions to Global Ocean Plastic Waste.

At the request of the committee, Nancy Wallace, Director of the MDP, provided an overview of the Interagency Marine Debris Coordinating Committee and Hillary Burgess, Monitoring Coordinator, shared information on the Marine Debris Monitoring and Assessment Program. The MDP provided support to NASEM to undertake the study, as required in the Save Our Seas 2.0 Act of 2020. The focus of this session was to gather information to inform their task to assess the potential value of a national marine debris tracking and monitoring system and how such a system might be designed and implemented.
