Marine Debris Program Meets with Removal Grantees from Delaware and New Jersey

MARCH 31, 2017 -- Marine Debris Program staff met in Salem, New Jersey with five grantees for a mid-project progress meeting. The projects all target preventing or removing derelict fishing gear, specifically crab pots, from Delaware Bay and New Jersey coastal waters.

These projects are putting local crabbers to work in the winter, recovering lost pots that take crabs (and other bycatch species) out of the fishery and reduce the potential catch that crabbers can take to market. During the meeting, grantees provided updates on the status of their projects as well as shared lessons learned and discussed areas for coordination between groups.
