National Ocean Service Awarded Department of Commerce Green Grant

The Green Grant Program is intended to stimulate investment in sustainability, environmental stewardship, and employee support programs within the department. The NOS Zero Waste Team (composed of representatives from each Program Office) is working to reduce waste in daily activities and events. The Green Grant funding will be used to create zero waste kits to reduce waste generated at NOS events and workshops. Each zero waste kit will contain reusable plates, cups, flatware, utensils, napkins, and name tags to help eliminate the need for single-use items.

Using just one zero waste kit in 2019, the Marine Debris Program diverted more than 12,000 items from the landfill. The NOS Zero Waste Team representatives requested kits on behalf of their program office, and will notify the offices receiving the kits when they are available later this year.
