New CAMEO Chemicals Product Update Offers Enhanced Emergency Response Data and Improved Usability

JUNE 17, 2024 — The latest version of the CAMEO Chemicals 3.1.0 hazardous materials database is now available. The latest release includes key emergency response data updates from the 2024 Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) that are the result of a four-year, multinational collaboration.

CAMEO Chemicals users can learn about critical response information for thousands of chemicals and use the reactivity tool to find out what hazards, such as explosions or corrosive byproducts, might occur when two substances mix together. Firefighters and emergency planners around the world rely on CAMEO Chemicals to prepare for and respond to emergencies.

CAMEO Chemicals 3.1.0 is available as a website, mobile website, a desktop program for Windows and Mac, a mobile app for iOS devices on the App Store, and a mobile app for Android devices on Google Play.

One of the major improvements in CAMEO Chemicals 3.1.0 is an update to the 2024 Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) data.

The ERG—described as the "go-to manual to help deal with hazmat transportation accidents during the critical first 30 minutes"—is used extensively by first responders in the United States. The ERG is revised every four years as a joint effort by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Transport Canada, and Mexico's Secretariat of Infrastructures, Communications, and Transport. Changes to the 2024 ERG include updated response guides; revised initial isolation and protective action distances; consolidated Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Agents information; and many other general enhancements. The ERG response guide PDFs are available in CAMEO Chemicals in English, French, and Spanish.

In addition to the new 2024 ERG data, the CAMEO team also enhanced the latest CAMEO Chemicals 3.1.0 version by:

  • Adding an address search feature to the mapping tool that plots initial isolation and protective action distances from the ERG. The map can be accessed from any UN/NA datasheet that has the ERG Table 1 (or Table 3) values from the green section.
  • Updating the chemical record data from several sources, including the Environmental Protection Agency  regulatory data, Pocket Guide values from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, DuPont suit fabric breakthrough times, Hazmat Table (49 CFR 172.101) shipping data, International Chemical Safety Cards, and toxic Levels of Concern.
  • Revising the extensive user help documentation.
