NOAA Experts Attend Workshop on Communicating Science During Negotiations

MARCH 9, 2020 — This week NOAA experts from Damage Assessment Remediation and Restoration Program (DARRP) and the General Council for Natural Resources gathered at NOAA's office in St. Petersburg, Florida, for a workshop to improve their negotiating skills to help ensure that the best outcomes can be achieved on behalf of the public.

The ability for technical and scientific experts to communicate their positions in a persuasive way is a skill that doesn't always come naturally. That's why NOAA brought in Kwame Christian, Director of the American Negotiation Institute, to host a workshop on this topic.

Attendees learned to recognize negotiation strategies that they might encounter, how to prepare for negotiations, and how to have higher level discussions about complex topics to best achieve their goals. These skills are important for NOAA DARRP experts as they communicate and negotiate with responsible parties to reach agreements that benefit communities, economies, and environments that are impacted  by pollution.
