Oil Spill Legislation on the Hill

MAY 13, 2019 — Since the 116th Congress began on January 3, 2019, several bills have been introduced that are relevant to the work of OR&R.

Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz (D, FL-23) introduced H.R. 2352, the Marine Oil Spill Prevention Act. This bill was also introduced in the last Congress by Senator Nelson and Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz, with minor differences. Some provisions, such as Sec. 105, “Navigational measures for protection of natural resources,” and Sec. 201, "Improvements to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration oil spill response, containment, and prevention," appear in bills at least as far back as 2011. On Wednesday, May 7th, Congressman Kildee (D, MI-05) and Senator Peters (D, MI) introduced legislation to require updates to ESI Maps in the Great Lakes, similar to last year. All of these bills and more are tracked by the OR&R Policy Analyst. You can view the bill tracker and other resources on the Congress section of the intranet.
