While there, Chris collaborated on the Oil in Litteral Substrates (OILS) project, which is providing a planning framework for responding to potential oil spills in the Wadden Sea, a region of great ecological and economic importance, characterized by vast expanses of intertidal mudflats. He worked with researchers at NHL Stenden to update NOAA’s GNOME oil spill model to support the unique environment of the Wadden Sea. As a result, NOAA is also better poised to support oil spill response in tidal flat regions in the United States. In addition to the work on GNOME, Chris gave a lecture on oil spill science to students at NHL Stenden and Van Hall Larenstein University, attended the International Oil Spill Experience hosted by Spill Response Group Holland, and met with the modeling group at Deltares to discuss possible collaboration.
