OR&R Staff Honored with NOAA Bronze and Distinguished Career Awards

MAY 23, 2014 -- On May 20, 2014, 13 OR&R employees received NOAA Bronze Medals and Distinguished Career Awards, presented in Silver Spring, Maryland. The highest honorary award granted by NOAA's Undersecretary, a Bronze Medal is defined as superior performance characterized by outstanding or significant contributions which have increased the efficiency and effectiveness of the operating unit. Two teams in the National Ocean Service received this award.

One team received it for completely overhauling NOAA's oil spill Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique (SCAT) program, resulting in national leadership in spill response training and execution:

  • Cmdr. Elizabeth Kretovic, Office of Marine and Aviation Operations
  • Nicolle Rutherford
  • Gary Shigenaka
  • Jordan Stout
  • John Tarpley
  • Ian Zelo

Another team from DARRP received the Bronze Medal for achieving a $22.7 million settlement to restore critical NOAA and tribal resources injured by waste site contamination in the St. Lawrence River environment:

  • Marguerite Matera, Office of General Counsel
  • Laurie Lee, Office of General Counsel
  • Jason Forman, Office of General Counsel
  • Mathias Collins, National Marine Fisheries Service

  • Carl Alderson, National Marine Fisheries Service
  • Julie Sims, National Marine Fisheries Service

Two OR&R employees were honored with the Distinguished Career Award, which is designed to recognize sustained, long-term achievement in advancing the goals and missions of NOAA:

Mark W. Miller: For sustained excellence in contributions to oil and chemical spill science, preparedness, and response throughout 25 years of service to NOAA

Dolores Toscano: For her talent, hard work, and exemplary teamwork in federal service for 42 years, including 36 years with the National Ocean Service in Maryland and Florida.
