OR&R Emergency Response Division Supports Navy Oil Spill Meeting
AUGUST 3, 2017--Oil spill managers for the US Navy held an Oil & Hazardous Spill Prevention and Response Workshop at the Naval Base Ventura County (California) this week and invited OR&R’s Emergency Response Division (ERD) to discuss NOAA’s scientific support capabilities for oil spill planning, exercises, training, and response. Navy On-Scene Coordinators (NOSCs) from around the country and overseas attended, many of whom have worked with NOAA SSCs and responders in the past. Topics presented and discussed, included:
- NOAA’s role supporting the USCG
- NOAA models & tools
- Emergency consultations under the Endangered Species and National Historic Preservation Acts
- Natural Resource Trustee engagement
- Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA)
- Shoreline assessment (aka “SCAT”)
- Non-traditional support capabilities for incidents and exercises involving un-exploded ordnance (UXO) and radiological releases
Following a morning of NOAA-related topics, the Navy’s Supervisor of Salvage & Diving (SUPSALV) hosted a field trip to the Navy’s port complex to demonstrate the myriad of oil spill response capabilities the Navy has available in the US and overseas in the event of mishaps and marine casualties involving US Navy ships.
