OR&R Participates in the National Marine Educators Association Conference

JULY 7, 2017--From June 25 - 28, OR&R representatives from the Marine Debris Program (MDP) participated in the National Marine Educators Association Conference in Charleston, South Carolina.

This annual conference brings together marine educators from around the world to promote awareness and education of the global marine environment. MDP staff joined formal teachers as well as educators from organizations such as aquariums, various NGOs, and other NOAA offices in learning from each other about the latest approaches to marine education.

MDP Communications and Education Specialist, Krista Stegemann, presented on preventing marine debris through education and outreach, including an overview of marine debris messaging guidelines, examples of prevention projects, and the MDP educational resources available to educators. Several other presenters also focused on pollution problems facing the marine environment, with many references to NOAA materials as useful resources. MDP Pacific Islands Regional Coordinator, Grace Chon, collaborated with the NOAA Office of Education on their OneNOAA exhibit. The collaborative atmosphere throughout the conference resulted in attendees leaving with new resources and ideas to take back and implement at their home institutions.
