OR&R Participates in Restore America’s Estuaries and Coastal Society Joint Conference

Crab pot being hauled onto a boat.
Nir Barnea, of the Marine Debris Program, gave a presentation at the Restore America’s Estuaries/ Coastal Society joint conference on derelict fishing gear. Here, a discarded crab pot is hauled onto a boat. (Northwest Straits)

This marks the first time the two organizations have merged their meetings. OR&R coordinated with other offices within NOAA to sponsor the event. OR&R’s work pervaded the conference with discussions of Natural Resource Damage Assessments, marine debris, and disaster planning. OR&R was represented at the conference this year with a presentation from Nir Barnea on Derelict Fishing Gear, and participation in the National Ocean Service’s stakeholder roundtable. This year the conference theme was “Inspiring Action, Creating Resilience,” which highlighted strong connections between OR&R’s restoration mission and the National Ocean Service’s coastal resilience priority. OR&R's Kate Clark, Dave Westerholm, Nir Barnea, and Meg Imholt attended. Tom Brosnan, of OR&R’s Assessment and Restoration Division, served on the conference planning committee.
