OR&R participates in U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) Spring Meeting

MARCH 4, 2016--Multiple members of OR&R participated in the IOOS spring meeting on March 1-2 with NOAA’s National Ocean Service IOOS program office and leadership of IOOS Regional Associations held in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Office Director David Westerholm participated in the meeting, as did each of the OR&R division chiefs during an OR&R focused session consisting of an office overview and presentations on spill modeling, spatial data management, and marine debris research.

This was followed by discussion of areas of existing and potential IOOS collaboration for each of these areas. The spill modeling discussion led by Emergency Response Division’s Amy MacFadyen highlighted the use of both regional current models and real-time ocean observations as well as access to regional experts provided through IOOS and regional partners for purposes of spill modeling using OR&R’s General NOAA Operational Modeling Environment (GNOME) and related GNOME Online Oceanographic Data Server (GOODS). The Assessment and Restoration Division/Spatial Data Branch’s Robb Wright highlighted SDB’s work with a focus on the Data Integration, Visualization, Exploration, and Reporting (DIVER) and the Environmental Response Management Application (ERMA). The Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS) highlighted their ongoing positive collaboration with the Spatial Data Branch on Arctic ERMA. Alison Hammer from the Marine Debris Division provided an overview of NOAA’s Marine Debris Program and highlighted a number of areas of marine debris research that offer potential for collaboration with IOOS regional partners.

The programs involved agreed to further communication and sharing of contacts to facilitate further regional collaboration in common areas of interest.
