OR&R at UNH Oil Spill Response Forum

What have we learned from Exxon Valdez and Deepwater Horizon, and where are we going? The week of October 27, the University of New Hampshire (UNH) gathered representatives from across the response community to discuss just that.

Forum attendees and speakers came from a variety of backgrounds including government, industry, academia, media, and nonprofit groups. Speakers shared their perspectives with respect to integration of academic science during spill response, the role of the media, managing policy and politics, and where to go from here given what we have learned from both of these major spills. NOAA's Office of Response and Restoration Gary Shigenaka kicked off the event with an overview of oil spills the United States. David Kennedy chaired a session on the Exxon Valdez oil spill response. Charlie Henry represented OR&R in a panel on the role of science. Dave Westerholm presented in a session entitled Future Spill Scenarios and also rounded out the forum in a discussion with other leaders on the path forward. Debbie Payton, Steve Lehmann, Ed Levine, Kate Clark, and Meg Imholt also attended. UNH plans to make video and slides from the presentations available. For additional information, visit the Oil Spill Response Forum website or contact Meg.Imholt@noaa.gov.
