Passaic River Revised Community Involvement Plan Issued

AUGUST 18, 2017--A revised Community Involvement Plan has been issued for the Passaic River. Since 2003, NOAA and our co-trustees, US Department of Interior, and the State of New Jersey, have partnered with the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers to bring each agency’s authorities to bear on the complex environmental problems of the Lower Passaic River.

Report cover.

The revised Community Involvement Plan provides a focus on the planned cleanup of the lower 8.3 miles of the river - part of a comprehensive strategy to investigate, clean up, and conduct restoration related to the 17-mile stretch of the Lower Passaic River as well as Newark Bay including portions of the Hackensack River, the Kill van Kull, and the Arthur Kill, all of which are part of the Diamond Alkali Superfund Site. The limited open spaces in the area provide critically important breeding, nursery, resident, and migratory habitat for a wide range of species. The interagency partners are working together to reduce exposure to contaminants, improve habitat, and enhance recreational opportunities.
