Preparation of Oil Spill Preparedness Plan for Snohomish County, WA
ENS Rachel Pryor is the new Assistant Scientific Support Coordinator (SSC) for the West Coast. On February 18, 2014, ENS Rachel Pryor attended the Snohomish County Marine Resources Advisory Committee monthly meeting at the County Administration building in Everett, WA.
She participated in discussions regarding the preparation of an oil spill preparedness plan for Snohomish County, WA. The MRC and citizens of Snohomish County are acutely aware of the increased transport of oil via railroads and would like to be ready to respond efficiently in the event of a possible train derailment.
Primary goals of the MRC Oil Spill Subcommittee include:
- Recruit volunteers in Snohomish County for the Department of Ecology Vessel of Opportunity program.
- Volunteers with personal vessels will be able to assist in emergency response by arriving on-scene to deploy boom or absorbents.
- Participate in oil spill drills and build a rapport with emergency responders at the county/state/federal level
- Prioritize species at risk in Snohomish County
ENS Pryor is excited to offer assistance and provide awareness of NOAA’s oil spill response tools and training sessions to county level officials and stakeholders.
