Marine Debris on the Lost Coast

Sherry Lippiatt, NOAA's Marine Debris Program California Regional Coordinator, participated in a winter lecture series hosted by the Bureau of Land Management King Range National Conservation Area. This region is home to the "Lost Coast," some of the most remote coastline in California.

The presentation focused on the collaborative response to the threat of Japan tsunami marine debris washing ashore, efforts to model debris movement, debris sightings and confirmed items, and potential environmental and safety impacts. The evening also included a discussion about local issues and ways to prevent debris at the source, as tsunami debris is just a small part of the everyday problem of marine debris.
