Alaska Regional Response Team Winter Meeting in Fairbanks

JANUARY 27, 2017 -- On January 18, Catherine Berg and Doug Helton participated in the Alaska Regional Response Team (RRT) winter meeting in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The RRT is chaired by the U.S. Coast Guard and EPA and is composed of the all the state and federal agencies that have a role in planning for oil and chemical spills. Industry and NGOs also attend.

The agenda includes updates on planning efforts around the state, recent response case-histories, as well as recent scientific studies on oil and dispersant degradation in Arctic waters.

The meeting took place on one of the coldest days of the year. The Celsius and Fahrenheit scales line up at -40 and a tradition at the nearby University of Fairbanks is to have your picture taken to document experiencing temperatures below -40.
