Completion of EPA Mitigation as Part of Industri-plex Superfund Remedy

JULY 21, 2017--Ken Finkelstein attended an EPA ribbon cutting ceremony on July 13, 2017 to celebrate the completion of the EPA mitigation work as part of the Industri-plex Superfund remedy.

The mitigation work included a fish ladder on the Aberjona River at the Central Falls dam in Winchester MA, wetland restoration along the Aberjona River in Woburn, MA and the Aberjona Nature Trail also in Woburn, MA. NOAA provided technical assistance to EPA in the assessment of watershed contamination and selection of remedial options for the river for close to 30 years. Joe Lemay, the EPA remedial project manager, should be applauded as he pushed for both a substantial river remedy along with mitigation, the latter, a relatively rare EPA demand in the Superfund program.
The Industri-plex site Trustee Council will soon meet to discuss the creation of a restoration plan using the 4.25 million dollar Natural Resource Damage settlement with the responsible parties. Funds from that settlement will be used as additional compensation for the public, likely adding on to the EPA mitigation work.
