Continuity of Operations Plan for Hurricane Season

APRIL 22, 2016--Each year, prior to hurricane season, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Sector Mobile, Alabama, simulates a disaster which would activate their Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP).

Designated team members reported to the Gulf of Mexico Disaster Response Center (DRC) to ensure setup, connectivity, and overall smooth operations. The DRC is the primary COOP facility for Sector Mobile and we use this exercise to make sure our IT-related infrastructure can support the USCG’s mission if this were a real event.

This year, the Sector Mobile exercise was incorporated into the District 8-wide (D8) COOP exercise. During exercise play on April 13, 2016, Sector Mobile tested communications and coordination with other locations such as Panama City, Florida and St. Louis, Missouri. In spite of a few technical challenges, the exercise was a success.
