DARRP Contributes to Salmon Restoration and Flood Control Project in Washington State

JULY 1, 2016--On June 29, Jason Lehto from the NOAA Damage Assessment, Remediation, and Restoration Program (DARRP) represented the Commencement Bay Trustees at a groundbreaking event located about an hour south of Seattle, Washington.

The Countyline Levee Setback Project includes removing a constrictive levee along the White River and reconnecting the river to more than 120 acres of historic floodplain, which provides significant off-channel habitat to many salmon species. This project will also significantly reduce flooding by allowing floodwaters more room to fan out and lose their erosive force. A new setback levee will be constructed to contain flows within the floodplain. The Commencement Bay Trustees contributed $4.8 million toward this project that is a totaled at an estimated $20.8 million.
