David Ropeik on Risk Communication

JUNE 19, 2015--OR&R's Ken Finkelstein of the Assessment and Restoration Division attended the North Atlantic Chapter of the Society of Environmental Toxicologists and Chemists on June 10-12, 2015 in Freeport, Maine.

A Risk Communication Short Course was presented by journalist David Ropeik. The speaker noted that outrage, not hazard drives risk perception. Ropeik discussed how human emotion drives perceived risk and how choice, control, uncertainty, risk vs. benefit, trust, etc., plays into risk communication.

Following the short course, was a two-day meeting. Ken chaired the session on Methods in Risk and Chemical Hazard Assessment and presented a platform presentation on Benthic Injury Dose-Response Models for PCB-Contaminated Sediment.
