International Joint Commission's Microplastics in the Great Lakes Workshop

APRIL 29, 2016--During the week of April 25, the NOAA Marine Debris Program's Great Lakes Regional Coordinator, Sarah Lowe, participated in the International Joint Commission's Microplastics in the Great Lakes Workshop.

The International Joint Commission (IJC) is a bi-national organization established by the United States and Canada under the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909 and is responsible for regulating shared water uses and investigating transboundary issues and recommending solutions to both governments. This workshop brought together approximately 35 experts from all sectors (governments, academia, NGOs, industry, etc.) to better understand and develop recommendations on microplastics in the Great Lakes. Sarah presented on the program's regional, national, and international efforts related to microplastics. Within the next few months, the workshop report and draft recommendations developed by all participants will be made available to the public for comments via the IJC's website.
