Lardner’s Point Park, Athos I Oil Spill Restoration Site, Honored with Green Park Award

APRIL 15, 2015--On April 11, 2015, Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Pennsylvania Recreation & Park Society honored Lardner’s Point Park with its Green Park Award.

Implemented by the Delaware River City Corporation and the City of Philadelphia, Lardner’s Point was one of 10 restoration projects from the M/T Athos I oil spill in 2004.

The Green Park Award recognizes excellence in the public park community for those that demonstrate the integration of green and sustainable park practices and efforts that connect people to nature. Park amenities include a restored pier for fishing, accessible picnic areas, spaces to walk and bike, and a river overlook. Lardner’s Point Park is the first public access to the Delaware River in the Tacony neighborhood of Philadelphia.

To restore the environmental impacts from the 265,000 gallons of oil released from the Athos I, NOAA and co-trustees from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service partnered with the Delaware River City Corporation by contributing part of the settlement from the spill to add a living shoreline to the park, including wetland plantings. Construction of the park was completed in 2012.
