Marine Debris Program Helps Out With Some Spring Cleaning

MAY 5, 2017--On April 29, Marine Debris Program staff participated in the CoastSavers annual spring cleanup in Washington State.

Nearly 1,300 volunteers mobilized to 60 sites, from Port Townsend to the east, along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and all along the outer coast, to Cape Disappointment on the Columbia River to the south. Over 20 tons of marine debris were removed, and some of it was recycled in a pilot project with TerraCycle. The first project of its kind for CoastSavers, it is hoped that this recycling effort will be expanded in future years.
