Marine Debris Program Participates in Annual World Whale Day

MARCH 3, 2017-- Pacific Whale Foundation celebrated their 37th Annual World Whale Day in Kihei, Maui on February 18.

World Whale Day is a community festival with a global mission to raise public awareness and inspire conservation of marine wildlife and their ocean habitat. The morning kicked off with a "Parade of Whales" and continued through until the evening with activities and various outreach stations educating the community to be eco-friendly.

One of Maui's largest events, tourists and locals attended the festival and stopped by the Pacific Whale Foundation's research station and NOAA's Marine Debris Program (MDP) booth. Pacific Whale Foundation was awarded MDP's Prevention through Education and Outreach Grant Competition last year, and they have focused their project on outreach regarding the tobacco ban on select beaches to reduce the amount of cigarette butts, one of the top items found during cleanups.
