Marine Debris Program Staff Mentors Early Career Oceanographers

JULY 28, 2017--On July 23, the NOAA Marine Debris Program’s California Regional Coordinator, Sherry Lippiatt, spoke on a career and mentoring panel as part of the Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) in Chemical Oceanography.

The GRS took place the weekend leading into the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) in Chemical Oceanography, which was held at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire. The seminar provided a venue for about 60 students and post-docs to convene in a less intimidating, more informal atmosphere. Sherry was joined on the panel by Professor Lihini Aluwihare from Scripps Institute of Oceanography and Professor David Hastings from Eckerd College. The panelists answered questions about various aspects of different career paths, ranging from the day-to-day balancing of priorities, work-life balance, and how to break the news to your PhD Advisor that you want to leave academia. It was a great opportunity to share information about fellowship opportunities and jobs at NOAA, and led to many informal conversations over the course of the GRC.
