Mississippi Marine Debris Response Planning Workshop

OCTOBER 14, 2016--On Oct. 11 and 12, the NOAA Marine Debris Program coordinated and hosted the Mississippi Marine Debris Response Planning Stakeholder Workshop.

The workshop was held in partnership with the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) at the Biloxi Visitors Center in Biloxi, Mississippi, in an effort to strengthen coordination between federal, state, and local organizations to improve preparedness for an incident that generates debris in Mississippi’s waterways. During the day and a half workshop, participants shared their agency’s roles, responsibilities, and jurisdictions; discussed permitting and compliance procedures; and ran through scenarios using a response flowchart developed by the Marine Debris Program. The information gathered during this workshop will be incorporated into the Mississippi Incident Waterway Debris Response Guide, which should be released this winter.
