National Training on Bakken Crude Oil

On January 12, 2015, NOAA participated in a nationally broadcast presentation hosted by the National Response Team (NRT) Training Subcommittee. The training session was designed for planners and field responders from federal, state, local, and tribal governments to learn about emerging risks associated with Bakken crude oil.

The event was a live webinar and included questions and answers with subject matter experts from NOAA (Scientific Support Coordinator), U.S. Department of Transportation (Enforcement Officer), Transport Canada (Containment Specialist), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Safety and Occupational Health Specialist), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Environmental Response Team and Federal On-Scene Coordinator) and Environment Canada (Field Work and Response Unit ).

The health and safety-related topics emphasized included:


  • Where Bakken oil is coming from
  • How is it being transported
  • Bakken chemistry
  • Response issues
  • Case studies from recent incidents

Over 150 participants from across the U.S. joined the webinar.
