OR&R Student Project Focuses on Emerging Risks in Marine Transport

DECEMBER 11, 2015--On December 15, University of Washington students and staff will brief interested OR&R staff on a joint project they are working on concerning emerging risks in marine transport.

This project is done in conjunction with the International Tankers Owners Pollution Federation (ITOPF). Their presentation will be at 11:00 a.m. (Pacific) in OR&R’s building 3 conference room on the NOAA Sand Point campus in Seattle.

The project will look at how climate change, market dynamics, and political instability are reshaping the marine transportation of petroleum and other products in world markets. Arctic sea routes are developing, North American oil exports are increasing as imports are decreasing, and super-container vessels are entering into trade. As shipping routes and products change, new risks are emerging. The challenge facing spill preparedness and response organizations is to understand how to best prepare for efficient and effective response to these emerging risks.
