Multicultural Initiative in the Marine Sciences (MIMSUP)

OR&R biologist Gary Shigenaka continued the longtime Emergency Response Division (ERD) tradition of interacting with students selected for a National Science Foundation program designed to support minorities in the marine sciences.

The Multicultural Initiative in the Marine Sciences (MIMSUP) has been administered by Dr. Brian Bingham of the Shannon Point Marine Lab of Western Washington University for nearly a quarter century. The program is designed to increase diversity within the next generation of marine scientists by bringing multicultural undergraduates to Shannon Point Marine Lab where they receive intensive training in the marine sciences and in professional opportunities available to those who choose this career path. Now hosted by the NMFS Alaska Fisheries Science Center, ERD initially established the MIMSUP connection to NOAA in 1992 and has participated nearly every year since. After a long and very successful history of inspiring disadvantaged student to continue in a STEM career path, 2015 is the final year of National Science Foundation support.
