NOAA Visits Nature Conservancy and Quinault Indian Nation’s Derelict Gear Removal Project

On October 3, 2014, staff from NOAA Marine Debris Program and NOAA Restoration Center met in Westport, WA, with The Nature Conservancy, Quinault Indian Nation, and Natural Resource Consultants project partners to discuss the project’s progress and scope.

This collaborative project focuses on survey and removal of derelict Dungeness crab pot remaining in the water after the end of the fishing season. The project will also work to develop a sustainable reporting and annual recovery program with the Quinault Department of Fisheries, in consultation with the tribal fishing community, and The Nature Conservancy to facilitate reporting and prevent loss of crab pots.

This project is part of NOAA’s on-going work to address derelict fishing gear nation-wide, and to support its partners efforts to develop programs and capacity to prevent and remove derelict fishing gear.
