Monitoring Marine Debris in the Gulf
DECEMBER 9, 2016--On November 30 and December 1, the NOAA Marine Debris Program (MDP) attended the 2016 Mississippi-Alabama Bays and Bayous Symposium in Biloxi, Mississippi.
The theme for the symposium was “From Thoughts to Actions: Restoration on the Gulf Coast,” and included presentations about hazard resilience, impacts, management, and restoration, including several presentations on marine debris.
The MDP’s Gulf of Mexico Regional Coordinator, Caitlin Wessel, attended meeting activities and presented on the MDP’s Marine Debris Monitoring and Assessment Project (MDMAP) expansion into the Gulf of Mexico, including how it is mapping debris occurrence and accumulation rates. The presentation was an opportunity to further marine debris awareness and disseminate pertinent findings to groups who may be impacted locally.
