NOS Operational Roles Detailed at FEMA Region 3 Regional Interagency Steering Committee
JUNE 3, 2019 — On May 24, Kate Wheelock, Chief of the Disaster Preparedness Program, presented on the full breadth NOS operational response capabilities at the FEMA Region 3 (Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia) bi-annual Regional Interagency Steering Committee (RISC) Meeting.
At the request of Region 3, the presentation focused on post-hurricane response capabilities. To that end, it included discussion of aerial imagery, hydrographic surveys, pollution response, and marine debris removal, as well as NOAA Fisheries' ability to provide law enforcement, upon request. Mention was also made of NOS's generation of QuickLooks and current participation in ongoing FEMA-funded recovery work in Puerto Rico. The presentation generated awareness among the RISC members of NOAA beyond the more familiar National Weather Service and interest in additional information sharing.
