OR&R Participates in Science Communication Panel at Salish Sea Conference

APRIL 13, 2018 — On April 6, 2018, Doug Helton joined a panel of communication experts at the 2018 Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference to discuss effective science communication.

The other panelists included Cathy Angell, the coordinator of the Coastal Training Program at the Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Mike Parfit, filmmaker at Mountainside Films, which produced "Saving Luna” and other films about whale recovery; and Randy Olson, author of the book "Don't be such a Scientist”. Each panelist gave a brief summary of their activities, challenges, and successes with science communication and then engaged the audience’s questions about how to their improve science communications. Doug focused on the challenges of science communications during environmental emergencies including Deepwater Horizon, and highlighted the evolution of OR&R infographics and trajectory models. The session was hosted by Hilary Wilkinson of Veda Environmental, in Bellingham, WA.
