OR&R Prepares Great Lakes Partners for Shoreline Oiling Response
JULY 15, 2024 — On June 10-12, OR&R conducted shoreline oiling assessment and treatment training with federal, state, tribal, and local partners in the Northern Michigan Area Committee of the Great Lakes.
Twenty-five emergency responders based in Northern Michigan gathered in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan for the training. Participants included members of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern Michigan; Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy; the Bay Mills Ojibwe Tribe; the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians; the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians; Lambda Energy; environmental services company HEPACO; T&T Salvage; and the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department.
Topics covered included oil chemistry and weathering processes; shoreline dynamics and sensitivities; oiled shoreline survey methods; and the scientific framework for evaluating treatment options. The class also had the opportunity to visit an industry open house hosted by pipeline and energy company Enbridge in St. Ignace, Michigan. At the open house, trainees saw different types of mechanical containment and recovery equipment as well as the Enbridge Straits Maritime Operations Center, which is responsible for monitoring vessel traffic crossing over the Enbridge Line 5 underwater pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac.
