Solicitation of Nominations for Marine Debris Foundation Board of Directors

MAY 24, 2021 —NOAA Marine Debris Program is pleased to announce a solicitation of nominations for the Marine Debris Foundation Board of Directors. The Save Our Seas 2.0 Act of 2020 established the Marine Debris Foundation (Foundation) as a charitable and nonprofit organization to support the efforts of NOAA and other entities to address marine debris and directed the Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere to appoint the Foundation’s governing Board of Directors (Board).

NOAA is searching for twelve people to serve as Directors on the new Board, representing diverse points of view relating to the assessment, prevention, reduction, and removal of marine debris. Candidates may also have expertise in post-consumer materials management or a circular economy, ocean and coastal resource conservation science or policy, and international trade or foreign policy.

NOAA also seeks candidates with experience or skills related to fundraising and nonprofit management. The full list of additional selection criteria is available in the Federal Register Notice or on the Marine Debris Program website.

The Foundation's success is dependent on the ability to constitute a Board that includes people with different experiences and expertise who can challenge each other’s assumptions with new viewpoints. NOAA seeks nominees representing a variety of backgrounds, areas of expertise, and experiences, and who will contribute to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive Board.

Information on the responsibilities of the Board, term length, and selection criteria is available in a Federal Register Notice. The Federal Register Notice also specifies the materials required in the nomination packages and provides instructions on submitting the nomination packages to NOAA. Nominations must be received in entirety no later than 11:59 p.m. EDT on June 30, 2021. More information is also available on the NOAA Marine Debris Program website.
