Lecture: BSEE’s Ohmsett Facility: Overview, Recent Activities, and Future Plans

Thursday, February 16, 2023

We hope you can join this lecture — part of the monthly lecture series, You Don't Know What You Don't Know!

In this month's episode, we will be diving into the science of oil spill response and what new research is being performed by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement's (BSEE) National Oil Spill Response Research and Renewable Energy Test Facility at Ohmsett. In our episode, we will hear from Dr. Tom Coolbaugh, Ohmsett's Facility Manager, as he gives an overview of the facility, and discusses their current and future activities.

Dr. Coolbaugh works for Applied Research Associates as the Program/Facility Manager at BSEE’s Ohmsett wave tank. He retired from ExxonMobil after more than 32 years, where he was the Technology and Advocacy Advisor for the Emergency Preparedness and Response organization. At Ohmsett, he continues to focus on the science of oil spill response. He was a member of National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine committees for “Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment” and “The Evaluation of the Use of Chemical Dispersants in Oil Spill Response.”  Tom received his B.A. in chemistry from Amherst College, a Ph.D. in chemistry from Caltech, and an M.S. in the Management of Technology from NYU.

Mark your calendar for the third Thursday of the month at noon PT — and please feel free to share the series with others in the professional spill planning, response, and environmental science communities.
