Lecture: Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Event Response

Scientists from NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) Competitive Research Program
Thursday, June 15, 2023

We hope you can join this lecture — part of the monthly lecture series, You Don't Know What You Don't Know!

In this month's episode, we'll learn about response to harmful algal bloom (HAB) events. Our presenters will be:

  • Sarah Pease, PhD, program manager and the Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Event Response Coordinator at NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) Competitive Research Program: Dr. Pease has over 10 years of experience in HAB science and monitoring. Last year she was a NOAA Knauss Fellow in the U.S. Senate, where she worked on science policy issues, including harmful algal blooms in Alaska.
  • Quay Dortch, PhD, Senior HAB Scientist with the NCCOS Competitive Research Program: Prior to coming to NOAA in 2003, Dr. Dortch was a faculty member at Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, where she conducted research on HABs and hypoxia in the northern Gulf of Mexico. She is the author or co-author of approximately 90 scientific papers, as well as multiple interagency reports, assessing the causes and impacts of HABs and proposing plans for improving research and response to HABs.
  • Marc Suddleson, MERHAB Program Manager at the NCCOS Competitive Research Program: Mr. Suddleson has overseen the creation and management of national competitive research programs for over 20 years, building effective partnerships between federal labs, universities, state and tribal agencies and industry to develop and implement harmful algae monitoring, alert, prediction, and response systems.

Mark your calendar for this month's lecture on the third Thursday of the month at noon PT — and please feel free to share the series with others in the professional spill planning, response, and environmental science communities.
