Getting NYC Kids "Hooked" on OR&R
JANUARY 26, 2018 — On Friday, January 19, OR&R participated in "Career Day" at a public high school in New York City.
OR&R Assessment and Restoration Division staff provided students with a primer on our scientists' work in nearby contaminated waterways like the Gowanus Canal and Newtown Creek. Many of the students who attended the OR&R sessions already had a range of their own experiences in marine science from growing up fishing for porgies in Jamaica Bay to interning as oyster gardeners with the Billion Oyster Project. They asked great questions about how we identify which contaminants to focus on when determining injuries and how different cleanup options can impact our determinations. They were excited to hear about the variety of activities OR&R is involved with in the New York and New Jersey Harbor - it was clear that these enthusiastic young scientists hope to continue be part of all the action!
