Downloading, Installing, and Running CAFE

Follow these instructions for downloading, installing, and running CAFE, OR&R's chemical aquatic fate and effects database.

Downloading CAFE

The current version of the downloadable "desktop" version of CAFE is 1.2. The Mac version was posted to the Web on 06/2/16, and the Windows version was updated 04/24/17 to include both 32- and 64-bit install packages. This version determines the appropriate package to install based on the computer being used. Download the appropriate version of CAFE:

CAFE for Windows can be run on Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 operating systems. CAFE for Mac can be run on Mountain Lion (10.8), Mavericks (10.9), Yosemite (10.10), and El Capitan (10.11) operating systems. Operating systems not listed here have not been tested and are not supported.

Installing CAFE

On a Windows PC: Once you have downloaded the installation program, double-click the "CAFE-PC-installer_1.2.exe" file icon, and follow the directions you'll see on your screen.

On a Mac: CAFE has been compressed as a self-extracting zip file so that it can be downloaded more easily from the Internet. [Need help with compressed files?]

Once you have unzipped CAFE, look for the CAFE folder on your desktop.

Running CAFE

In Windows: To start CAFE, from the Start menu, under Programs, choose "CAFE."

On a Mac: To start CAFE, double-click the CAFE application in the CAFE folder. [Seeing an "unidentified developer" message?] We suggest that you move the CAFE folder to your Applications folder.

For help in using CAFE, see the section, Getting Started with CAFE, and the other software documentation provided there.
