Download ESI Maps and GIS Data

On this page, you can download free Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps and data in a variety of formats:

  • PDF (Portable Document Format) files.
  • Geodatabase format with an ArcMap map document (.mxd). (The date following each geodatabase link shows when modifications were made to the data tables and/or map document only. The underlying data were collected circa the atlas publication date shown in bold.) This is the only GIS format that is modified after the original data publication. We've developed several ESI Tools to help you work with the geodatabase files.
  • Metadata is provided for all ESI data distributed in a GIS format. Available formats vary based on the date of publication. InPort is the current NOAA metadata repository, and newer metadata is only available in this format. In cases where metadata is provided in other formats, it may contain some additional information that did not get transferred to InPort.

The following formats are only available for ESI data published prior to 2014:

  • Threatened and Endangered Species (T&E) Geodatabase, a subset of the ESI data that focuses on species and habitats that were listed as threatened or endangered at the time of the atlas publication. (The federal and state Threatened and Endangered status will change as species populations recover or their existence faces greater peril.) A map document (.mxd) and layer files are also included.
  • Shapefiles, data tables (.dbf), and an ArcView 3.x project.
  • ArcExport files (.e00), with the relational and desktop data tables in ArcExport and text formats.

Where available, you can view ESI data or PDF maps in ERMA®, an online mapping tool for environmental response data, adapted to a variety of regions.

Downloads for ESIs that were generated using GIS (post-1993) include metadata in PDF format. Other metadata formats, as available, are included as a separate download. Additionally, for more recent atlases, links are provided to metadata in the NOAA metadata repository, InPort. Metadata for the post-2014 atlases is only available in InPort.

Florida

Coastal Florida is divided into five regions for the purpose of ESI updates. These regions are the Florida Panhandle (formerly West Florida), Northwest Peninsular Florida and Southwest Peninsular Florida (formerly West Peninsular Florida Volume 1 and Volume 2 respectively), South Florida, and Eastern Florida.

The GIS data for Florida were previously published as a single geodatabase covering the entire state. As GIS data are updated and posted here, the original geodatabase will be modified to exclude the areas where newer data are available. This geodatabase has been renamed Peninsular Florida. For historic purposes, the geodatabase of the entire state will continue to be available. The PDF maps for the 2012 Florida Panhandle data are in a slightly different format than those for other atlases.
